Dental braces (Orthodontics)

Dental braces fall into a field of dentistry, called orthodontics, which focuses on the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth.

The most common orthodontic complaint is the need for braces, which can be the result of many conditions including:
Overbite: Your top row of teeth stick too far out from your bottom teeth.
Underbite:Your bottom teeth stick out over your top row of teeth.
Crossbite: The top and bottom rows of teeth are not aligned correctly when biting down.
Crowding: When there is not enough space in your mouth for all your teeth and they begin to overlap.

These are only some of the conditions that can be treated through the use of braces. Crooked and malaligned teeth are also very difficult to clean sufficiently, which can lead to plaque build up, cavities and even gum disease and tooth decay. The aesthetic appeal of straighter teeth is also a good reason to agree to braces.

The treatment does not have to be painful, embarrassing or require you to have a metal framework attached to your teeth. Although, metal or traditional braces are still the most commonly used form of braces, advancements in technology and design have made other options available.

Invisalign braces are clear, aligners or trays that are made from molds of your teeth can correct orthodontic conditions and are less uncomfortable or difficult to clean than wire and metal braces. When it is time to ‘tighten’ the aligners, a new, adjusted set of aligners is used to slowly introduce changes to the teeth by applying pressure. These removable aligners are easy to clean and much more comfortable.
