Dental Crowns (Restorative measures)
When you have missing, cracked or broken teeth, give us a call! We are experts at restorative dental procedures at our practice in Midvale Utah. One of the many restorative services that we offer are Dental Crowns.
Crowns are fixed prosthetic aids that cover a damaged tooth to restore its appearance, shape, alignment and strength. These aids can be used to protect a fractured tooth or prevent a tooth from fracturing, as well as to cover a tooth that has had a root canal. One of the most important reasons for any restorative service, is that it prevents the damaged tooth from decay or further damage. Decay can easily spread through the mouth once a bacteria infection has taken hold. The structural integrity of one tooth will also affect the rest of the mouth as incorrect alignment or the decreased strength of teeth can lead to increased stress on other teeth or the jaw muscles, which can lead to other conditions, such as headaches and teeth grinding.
A patient who is in need of a crown will have the affected tooth numbed and any decay will be removed. The cleaned tooth will then be filed down to prepare it for the placement of the prosthetic aid. An imprint of the patient’s teeth are taken so that a lab can create the perfect crown. In the meantime, a temporary crown is fitted onto the prepared tooth so that bacteria can not enter the exposed tooth.
After one or two weeks, another visit to the dentist will allow the permanent crown to be placed and checked to see whether it has the proper look and fit, before it is cemented onto your natural tooth.
Once the procedure is complete, daily home care, which includes brushing and flossing, is required to maintain healthy, bacteria-free teeth, gums and crowns. Given proper care, you will never have to replace a crown.
