Dental implants can restore the functionality of your mouth when you have lost teeth or had teeth removed. Dental implants are a preferred treatment in our Midvale dentist office because, when compared to dentures and bridges, they are more aesthetically appealing and give the patient the ability to chew and speak normally as they are not removable.
Other benefits include durability, increased oral health, comfort and not having to deal with the maintenance needed for dentures or bridges..
Implants look like artificial teeth attached to metal frameworks. Conditional to the patient’s situation, one of two implants will be recommended.
One of the two options are endosteal implants, which entail metal framework to be surgically implanted into the jawbone. Once the gums have healed, metal posts with attaching artificial teeth are connected to the framework. The other option is subperiosteal implants. In this procedure the metal framework is placed on the jawbone and is naturally fixed in the mouth once the gums heal. The posts on the framework stick out of the gums to accommodate the artificial teeth.
Implants form part of restorative dentistry and are not only for individuals with missing teeth but can be used to replace broken teeth and teeth that have been damaged by decay.
A patient is required to have healthy gums and a sufficient amount of jawbone to be able to undergo implant treatments. Other surgical procedures, such as bone and gum grafts can be done before an implant procedure to allow a patient to be able to accomodate dental implants.
Patients who have diabetes, heart conditions or who are heavy smokers may not qualify for this type of procedure. Speak to our dentists to know whether dental implants are a viable option for you.
