Orthodontic retainers are used to hold teeth in their new, correct position following orthodontic treatment. They come in both fixed and removable varieties. Orthodontic retainers must be custom made to fit your mouth, and they are usually made of plastic or metal.
Fixed, or nonremovable, retainers are bonded to the back of your teeth and can only be removed by a dental professional. These are often also referred to as bonded or permanent retainers. Removable retainers are usually made of plastic and wire, and they can be taken out by the patient so they can eat, brush and floss normally. Wearing your retainer as directed by our dentist is important to prevent your teeth from moving back to their original position and causing your smile to become misaligned once more. Our dentist will discuss your retainer with you at the end of your orthodontic treatment to determine which type of retainer is right for your needs.
Retainers are typically worn for a few months to a year after braces are removed, in order to keep the newly straightened teeth in place. However, some people may need to wear their retainers for life.
